August was Awash with the Screams of the Right
Welcome to the August edition of the News in Review poetry series. As always, there was far too much going on this month to fit into one poem, and so I haven’t included everything. (Many may argue that I still put too much in…) But I have tried to include a balance of the good, the bad, the ugly, and the fun. August was very much drowned out (At least from where I’m standing) by the bigoted yells of the far right. It was very easy to miss the happy and the hopeful for all the racism and hatred. Thankfully I did find some, so make sure to read on and find the bright side of August mixed with the dark.
I will add a disclaimer that this piece was written by me; a British poet, and as such will be recording and commenting from news in a British perspective, which might mean some events you consider important from August 2025 are not included, and some things you have never heard of are more extensively covered.
The Bigots Have Been Loud!
The bigots have been loud this month,
Louder than usual I mean
With this deport everything regime
That’s sweeping the globe
Letting right wing parties probe
Their way into power.
Things look dour
As rioters demand
Asylum hotels be banned
Thankfully we took a stand,
Made the courts see sense,
Put an end to that nonsense
In Epping.
(For now, at least –
The bigots are appealing.)
Racists are busy stealing
The UK’s flags
Now red, blue, and white
Tattered rags
Fly throughout the country
Intimidating the people we
Should be protecting
Tories are defecting,
Jumping ship to join reform,
Farage is making quite a storm
With his Icy ideas
About deportation camps.
He should get his nose out of Mein Kampf,
He’s not in power…
Yet.
(Though he acts like victory’s already set)
A new vaccine has hit our nation
To quell the gonorrhea infestation
That’s one medication the U.S. Isn’t gonna sell
Since RFK told researchers to go to hell.
Oh well,
I guess the next Pandemic
Can start on their side of the Atlantic.
Just the latest in the long list of Trumps mistakes…
No not that list….
But whilst we’re on the subject,
Where is it?
You can’t hide it.
Ghislane Maxwell tried
But we all know she lied
Amazing what people say if you bribe
Them.
Not that it would have taken much…
The Orange toddler looks more and more corrupt
With every new statistic
(Even after going ballistic
And firing statisticions
For abusing their positions,
By not fudging his numbers properly
And displaying his bad decisions
To the courts.
Who, I’m happy to report,
Have closed down Aligator Alcatraz
(Or they had….)
And, had his tariffs outlawed.
There goes his one tactic for diplomacy…
Not that he had much clout left with anybody
Ecxept Israel
Oh Israel.
You realize targeting journalists
Makes you look more like terrorists
Than the people you claim to be fighting,
Especially if they’re in a hospital
That’s even more frightening
So much so that the world is uniting
Against you
And you plans for Gaza city
You, of all people should be able to see
How shitty
You are acting.
Stop the bombs!
Don’t invade!
And for God’s sake, let in foreign aid
And media!
Or better still, get rid of your prime minister
You’re starting to look like Russia.
Not really something to aspire
to…
At least Pu
tin’s not committing genocide
In Ukraine
Then again
That’s not for lack of trying…
He doesn’t want peace
Not even after flying
into Alaska
For a conference that didn’t even last a day,
Before they all gave up and went away,
Moving on to better things
Like 200-million-dollar ballroom wings
for the white house
Or gutting the public sector
Becouse they can’t afford to invest a
small amount on the population.
U.s. citizen’s obviously aren’t as important
As deportation
Nothing quite wins votes like immigration.
Superman’s joined ICE;
Not the real one from DC
Just the actor from 1993
Dean Cain, who most people agree
Is an arse,
I wonder why….
Trump has a tantrum, invades his own country
Deploys the national guard to washington DC
To kick all the homeless out of the City…
Definitely sounds like a national emergency
To me,
Doesn’t it?
And then he claims our human rights have gone to shit….
Honestly,
what a liberty…
The BBC investigate strictly
For drug related activity
A brige is approved from Italy
All the way to sically
The longest bridge the world has ever seen,
Sydney Sweeney braggs about her arien jeans
There’s radiation all over the place
From Walmart shrimp to Scottish lakes
The loch long monster might soon show its face
Or just die, given how much toxic waste
the fish there were exposed to
The minister for homelessness puts her tenants on the street
New laws in America approve drones for Uber eats
And RIP the English language, Gen Z finally defeats
It as Skibbidy is added to
The dictionary
Fear grips hold of Germany
Conscription’s coming back
To prepare incase Russia attacks
The UN holds an anti plastic
Meeting To no avail
They all fail
To agree
On a solution
Octopus fill the sea
Around the Uk
And cod flee
North
To Colder water
Seas get hotter.
The world get’s hotter
Europe’s burning
Asia’s sinkking
The U.S.A.’s
been hit by everything
Yet still the Tories think we need more coal….
The environment is out of control
We’re gonna have a heatwave in September
After the hottest summer anyone can remember
So I’m not just being british
When I complain about this
Weather
But it’s okay
Cause Taylor swift’s got a new album on the way
And the Beyeux tapistry’s moving to the UK
For a year,
Which really pissed off the French.
MCR’s going back on tour
K-Pop Demon hunters wiped the floor
with the rest of the arts
In basically every single chart.
And both sides of Korea make a start
On dismantling border propaganda
Trump sends refugees to Rwanda
Or tries to,
Hopefully the motion won’t go through
Like when Boris tried to do
The same thing.
Tom Holland seen swinging
Into Glasgow
Filming a new spiderman show
And Taylor swift want’s everyone to know
She’s engaged
South Korean workers are enraged
As starbucks bans printers from cafes
Suggesting they should hire office space
Instead of lugging in desktop PCs
Science makes a superfood for bees
To feed declining colonies
And UK over 70s
Can’t drive without Opticians’ Permission
Croc sales are in remission
As we figure out they’re not so hot
China hosts the first ever world robot
Games in Beijing
And we all sing
Happy 60th
To the ford
Transit
Van
Sidekick to the handyman
Since 1945
What a time to be alive…..
If only the bigots would desist
And oh yeah…
GIVE US THE EPSITINE LIST!!!
