Sonnet 001

Two Fuchsias and Ivy leaves on a green background

I feel it fitting that the first piece of poetry I share here is also the first piece I wrote (In my adult life at least.) A piece I call Sonnet 001… I’m not great at naming poetry. (You have been warned.) I started with a sonnet, since it was Shakespeare and his sonnets that first awoke my appreciation of poetry.

The Sonnet surrounded by flowers and Ivy leaves ‘Tis spring at last, when Gaea's earthy womb Brings forth her fruits and sets the world aflower, And weary gardeners watch their toils bloom, With vibrant carpet they the fields endower; In awe they stand and gaze upon the life That gently nurtured they into this Earth; A tear is shed, but quick forgot is strife And pain, o'ershadowed by their infants birth. In such a way my boy, I gaze on thee, As to my thumb thy tiny fingers grip; Not hurt nor woe; no agony could be Enough that thou should e'er from me be ripped. And so, when thee a blossomed canvas view, Remember me, for I will e'er love you.

About Sonnet 001

Sonnet 001, the first poem I wrote in adult life was inspired during a spring walk in 2020 during covid’s first lockdown. I seem slightly unusual in my appreciation for the lockdowns. They allowed me time to focus on art. Time to discover poetry. Without them I would not be sharing poetry or prose on this site. I would never have discovered my love for writing.

The artwork that accompanies the verse is, like all art so far on the site, a piece of my own. I am far from a perfect artist, but I enjoy drawing some of the things that inspired the pieces I write, and in turn the images that the piece now speaks to me.

Listen to Sonnet 001

I Intend to post more of my poetry going forward. Though it might be more sporadic than the episodes of the stories featured here on the Quill. Since part of the joy of poetry is hearing it spoken, I intend to record myself reading these pieces…
A reading (with a short video) of this piece can be found Here on You Tube. I intend to update this, and create a separate channel specifically for audio versions of everything on the site. As of now Sonnet 001 is the only piece that has an audio version, but that will change.

This Sonnet, and all other poetry I post here will be available to purchase as a print. Available in either canvas or framed cardboard, and either with or without the artwork displayed here. If you are interested in that, or want to commission a Sonnet of your own, then please visit my Ko-Fi page.
