Grounded – A Piece from April 2026

An Open Book, representing the feeling of holding a page between your fingers to be Grounded in reality.

I write poetry every day based upon news stories and current events, and at the end of each month, I compile the pieces I have written into a small collectionm which is avaliable on my Ko-fi page.
This Piece – Grounded – comes from the April collection, Records & Warfare.

Grounded is a piece all about the digitization of the world; the move away from the analogue of pages, of cassets, and of video; the trend away from the physical and towards the intangible. It was written on 25th April in response to Book Tok’s creation of a new bestsellers list, a move that celebrated the rise of influencers and the decline in newspaper crittics. A move that whilst good for some areas of the industry (certain genres in particular) pushed the impersonal.

Grounded is a retaliation, a plea for something physical in a world that sometimes seems to have forgotten the pleasures of touch.

Grounded

There’s something in the feel of holding paper in your fingers,
Something in the sound of vinyl floating through the air.
The Universe is moving in a digital direction
But we’ll always want the weight of something physical to share.

Your screen may be more vibrant than the colours of a rainbow,
Your speakers cast explosions like you’re standing in the war
But your magic’s ineffective where experience is lacking
For it can’t inspire feelings that have not been felt before.

There’s something in the act of moving pieces round a game board,
Something in the presence of a human by your side
And though the world is with us every second via phone screen,
There’s always something greater that reality provides.

Thank you!
